In the early centuries of the Thousand, on top of a plateau near Tortona, on the left side of the river Grue, was erected a fortified castle surrounded by walls that belonged to the people Tortona, where resided the gentlemen who gave the name of that place; in the records and documents of the time, that name is designated indifferently as Mongualdone that Montegualdone. Only a few ruins of the castle are now visible; foundations; and a manor house recently built in the same place, radiating his gaze on the surrounding slopes.
From a document dated January 10, 1186, you may notice that the Baldus Montegualdonis acolyte was canon of the cathedral chapter of Tortona (Annals of Tortona, I, 321 and Carnival, the Church of S. T., History of the Church of T., 239 ); canon of the cathedral is also Ido in 1202 (Annals of Tortona, I, 339); family Montegualdone is included in the list of those nobles who flourished in the year 1293 in T., then published in Milan in 1503 by Agostino Guidobono, senator of that city (id, I, 432.); in 1312, Ursula is the sister in the convent of Santa Chiara in T. (id., II, 34).
After just over 15 years since the peace treaty June 7, 1341 between the Guelphs and Ghibellines of Val Borbera, hatred and hostility provoked fights where Beca of Sorli, George and Manfredino Grappling S. Alosio, Ruffino, George and Oddegando of Montegualdone died. Because of its membership in the Guelph, Duke Filippo Maria Visconti ordered, in 1418, the demolition of the castle Mongualdone, in order to erase all traces of it, and enfeoffed the place to its general Buongiovanni Trotti. On October 6, 1496 dies of Montegualdone Alvisio son of James, son of Raffaele, and September 27, 1497 Filipino dies, daughter of Pantaleon Montegualdone and widow of John. Francesco Guidobono (Riv. Julia Dertona, December 1905, 30).
Because of the lack of other information on Dynasty from that moment, we can consider that became extinct during the first half of the sixteenth century.
